The Scout uniform has always been one identifying features of the Scouting program. It is not only utilitarian, but a link to a worldwide movement that encompasses more than 150 countries. It is also a link to a long rich tradition stretching back almost 100 years. Members of Troop 240 proudly wear that uniform. We have tried to incorporate on this page the information that a Scout in the Troop needs to obtain and properly wear his uniform. For a list of what a Scout must buy and what the Troop provides, as well as the current costs of these items, click here. Troop 97, of Fort Collins, CO, has provided a short history of the uniform on their Web Site. The current BSA uniform was designed, free of charge, by Oscar De La Renta in 1979.

Uniform ("Class A")

The "Class A" uniform is the full official Scout uniform. It is worn at all Troop meetings unless there is an express notification to the contrary. The "Class A" uniform consists of short-sleeved shirt (with all insignia properly placed). trousers, neckerchief and slide, Troop hat, socks, appropriate footwear (leather or canvas) and merit badge sash (if merit badges have been earned). Below you can find some aids for getting your uniform into shape.

Shirt

The placement of various insignia on a Scout uniform shirt can get tricky. Troop 240 uses short-sleeved shirts year round. Below are links to pages that show all the patches used and exactly where they go. These illustrations can be printed either by using your Browser's print command, or by placing the cursor over the diagram and clicking on the printer icon. Check out insignia placement on the Left Sleeve; Left Pocket; Right Pocket; and Right Sleeve.

Neckerchief and Slide

Troop 240 has its own official neckerchief which is dark green with red embroidered Scout Symbol and lettering. Scouts and Scouter who attained Eagle Scout rank have the option of wearing an Eagle Scout neckerchief. Wood Badgers also have the option of wearing their Wood Badge neckerchief. In addition, the Troop regularly holds open neckerchief nights and Scouts can wear any neckerchief to which they are entitled at these meetings.
The neckerchief is worn under the open collar of the shirt. A neckerchief is folded before wearing. To do this, fold the neckerchief on the long side by making several narrow flat folds, continuing to about 6" from the tip. The neckerchief is then placed under the collar, and a neckerchief slide is drawn over the tips and adjust to fit snugly. Scouts may use the standard BSA metal slide or a leather, plastic (such as Neal) or carved wooden slide. As with any part of the uniform, a Scout or Scouter cannot wear a slide from an event or camp they did not attend, or a council to which they did not belong.

Hat

Troop 240 has its own official baseball cap, dark green with red lettering and FDL that matches the Troop neckerchief. Pins may be worn on the hat, but ONLY Scouting pins that the Scout or Scouter has earned or from camps they have attended.

Belt

Scouts wear the official BSA web belt and buckle. Scouters and JASMs have the additional option of wearing a Scouting tooled leather belt (national, camp, wood badge, etc.) with an appropriate Scouting buckle. No item can be worn from a place or event that the Scouter personally did not attend.

Merit Badge Sash

The Merit Badge sash is used once a Scout has earned merit badges. It is worn on a "Class A" uniform diagonally over the right shoulder to the left hip. Merit Badges are sewn on in rows of three, straight across the sash, starting approximately 4" below the top of the sash. Award patches, such as the Tot'n Chit and 50 Miler Award may be worn on the back of the sash, oriented straight across the sash. Temporary patches, such as camp, trail, and activity patches may also be worn on the back of the sash. One temporary patch can be worn on the right pocket of the uniform shirt (see the Right Pocket Illustration for placement on the shirt.

Uniform ("Class B")

The "Class B" uniform is often used for outdoor events, and on rare, pre-announced Troop meetings. This consists of the Troop 240 T-Shirt and hat, with appropriate pants and footwear.

The Following Is Optional --

OA Sash

The Order Of The Arrow sash is a white sash with a red arrow worn diagonally over the right shoulder to the left hip. It is the symbol of the National Camping Honor Scoiety. The sash can be worn with either "Class A" or "Class B" uniforms (or no uniform at all), but ONLY during official Order Of The Arrow functions. There are three different sashes which identify the wearer's honor in the OA: the plain red arrow is Ordeal; the red arrow with two red bars, one above and one below, is Brotherhood; and the red arrow with the two bars and a red triangle in the center is Vigil Honor.

Jac-Shirt

The red Woolrich Jac-Shirt is now considered an optional part of the uniform. In the past, it was often used as a patch jacket, with patches from various camp and activities sewn on. However, with these patches now officially placed on the back of the merit badge sash and the advent of the BSA red patch vest, National Council guidelines allow for only one national level large back patch to be worn on the Jac-Shirt, centered between the shoulder blades. Permissible jacket patches include Jamborees, Philmont, Northern Tier, Sea Base, and the National OA.

Swim Suit Insignia

Some aquatics activities insignia are designed ONLY for use on swim suits. This includes the Mile Swim Award. The Mile Swim Award cannot be worn on either the uniform shirt or the merit badge sash.

Summer Camp Uniform of the Day

The Troop travels to summer camp in full "Class A" uniforms. The uniform of the day consists of a Scouting T-Shirt, uniform shorts (or other appropriate pants), and, if wearing shorts, Scout socks. See the Troop's Summer Camp Guide for further information.
