| For the second straight year the winners of the Troop's Spring Cookoff put on a very successful cooking display at the Council's Kickoff meeting for the new Scouting year. The recipes included Connor McGrath's Chicken Pot Pie, Kevin B.'s Fruit Cobbler and Joe Acquafredda's Guadeloupe Chili Pie. The cooks arrived at 8:00am and by 10:00am the Scouts had everything ready for eating. I tasted two of the recipes: the chicken pot pie and the chili pie and they where excellent, but could not eat the fruit cobbler because it contained cinnamon to which I am allergic. Many Scouting professionals stopped by and praised the food as some of the best they have ever tasted. By about 11:30am everything all of Troop 240's food was gone; some people were disappointed that they didn't get a sample. Edna Acquafredda did a yeoman's job supervising the cleaning of the ovens. She also cleaned the Cobbler's Oven which was a tremendous job because of sugar sticking to the sides. (Next year this oven has to be lined with foil.) In addition, next year we have to figure out how to make additional food, possibly by increasing the amount cooked and by doing the chili pie & chicken pot pie in 14 inch dutch ovens rather than our 12 incher. The Scouts had along copies of the recipes to give out to anybody who wanted one. After they started serving samples of the food our site became a center of attention for many Scouters. We had along two copies of the Troop's cookbook which many people wanted to buy, but are not for sale yet. We are thinking of placing everything on a CD-Rom disc and selling it as a fund raiser. (Have to investigate that.) Meanwhile, the Scouts in between cooking and serving the food also helped out Ranachqua Lodge of the Order Of The Arrow in recruiting and updating information that the Lodge needed. Many of the Troop's Scouters, who are OA members, also participated in these endeavors. Also, Edna & Joe Acquafredda, and our trained Scouters, talked up and recruited for the Council's 2006 Wood Badge Course to be given in October. We were very successful at this. Everybody in the Troop who attended this event had a delicious steak and "fixings" dinner cooked by the Kickoff Meeting staff. This reporter finally got a correctly cooked steak done medium rare. That was a first. Overall, this was a very good event with everybody enjoying themselves. We all left between 1:30-2:00pm. Andy Stratford took his usual number of pictures which are now available above. -- James F. Dell, ASM Administration. |
