b070623_20 * Getting a lesson about how contaminants, like PCB's, are carried through the food chain via the river. (Contaminants are represented by the lei's.) A one time, the Hudson River was a running sewer; a toxic soup nearly incapable of sustaining life. The river itself was dying. Yet, cleaning up the river was a cause worth fighting for: the Hudson is everybody's river. * 640 x 480 * (375KB)

b070623_25 * This was after we set sail and were speaking of the Hudson nation's main venues for trade with boats carrying passengers and cargo up and down the river. That they just dock out into the water until time to pick up their shipment like this boat. As you can see, this cargo -- due to it is height above the water -- is empty and awaiting shipments to be loaded. * 640 x 480 * (429KB)

b070623_28 * Group lesson on how much oxygen is needed to support life in the Hudson River. A container of Hudson River water is tested for clarity and oxygen. * 640 x 480 * (422KB)
b070623_29 * Crewmember, Andy Stratford, Carmine & Dianna Tabacco, Annie (Awilda's sister), Cynthia Nieves, and Awilda Vasquez get a lesson on navigating the Hudson River from a Clearwater Crewmember. The group is viewing the boat map of the Hudson River where it shows the different depths by feet, submerged boats, and protruding rock boulders. It was explained that the river runs 315 miles long and up to 3.5 miles wide, beginning at Lake Tear Of The Clouds on Mt. Marcy, and emptying into the New York Bay at New York City. * 640 x 480 * (392KB)

This magnificent sailing ship picked us up at the 79th Street Boat Basin. It was a really beautiful area. There were a lot more adults than Scouts. (There were 31 adults and about 11 Scouts.) Awilda Vasquez and Delores Jackson showed their real Scouting Spirit by attending this trip, after their experience during the Canoe Trip. The Crew, and the Captain, introduced themselves to us. The Scouts were separated into two groups and the adults into another two groups. Salty, the leader of my group, in my opinion, was the best teacher. We learned many things about the Hudson River, the history of the Clearwater, water life, and environmental concerns. One thing that I personally liked was that a little before our return, we has a moment of silence. It was amazing, especially when you can hear nature and see things that you have never looked at closely before. I also liked fishing with a net. Many people were sad when the trip ended. You could tell that the crew had a lot of fun doing what they did and they were looking for volunteers to help crew the ship. This trip was amazing. -- James N., Troop Scribe.
